As such, many pro athletes recommend starting off with a good cardiovascular workout. Cardio workouts are great for maintaining physical endurance and lung power, but without really putting on a lot of strain on the muscles, tendons and joints of the lower extremities. At the same time, some cardio workouts can provide mental and emotional calm as well. Here are a few exercises that pro athletes use when conditioning for surfing.
1. Yoga. As you might know, yoga has been around since time immemorial; but people are still rediscovering its benefits. Pro athlete surfers use yoga to help control their breathing, which is elementary in almost all kinds of water sports. Additionally, yoga’s stretches and achieving certain kinds of poses encourage flexibility and balance — both of which are needed once you hit the waves. And lastly, this form of exercise has been noted for its calming effects for both the mental and physical aspect. However, in order to gain all these benefits, regular yoga sessions must be maintained. Sporadic sessions may work on a physical level, but achieving inner calm may take more than just one or two sitting.
2. Brisk walking, jogging, cycling or running. These cardio workouts may be a bit more strenuous than basic yoga, but it does help you keep fit without putting on a lot of muscles. These exercises also help build up physical endurance, and teach you ways on how to control your breathing in order to push yourself a little further.
Pro athletes also use these exercises when they perform visualization. As the name suggests, visualization is when a person runs a scene over and over in his or her mind that focuses on a successful performance of the sport. In this case, cresting over a wave and riding down a large tunnel of water, without breaking the stride.
